To a Degree of Separation

Itching to see Off the Grid take its first steps tonight in Berkeley.

Not itching to dine alongside 4,000 other hipsters, food snobs and baby boomers from North Berkeley.

Oh well, maybe when it's not freezing.

Speaking of B-Town, received this Groupon this morning for drinks at the Albatross Pub in Berkeley.

In a failed attempt to get an idea of the place's price range, came across this super kitschy, super awesome blog: Urban Sketchers SF.  Just check out this sketch of a typical night at the Albatross:

"Albatross Pub - at the bar." - artist unnamed

Above is a link to the Bay Area division, but the group Urban Sketchers is actually a much larger "network of artists from around the world".  So large in fact that it's become a 501(c)(3) "dedicated to fostering the art of on location drawing".  Just check out the manifesto:

1. We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation. 2. Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the places we live and where we travel. 3. Our drawings are a record of time and place. 4. We are truthful to the scenes we witness. 5. We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles. 6. We support each other and draw together. 7. We share our drawings online. 8.We show the world, one drawing at a time.

It's a flash mob for compulsive doodlers!  The site is brilliantly organized both by country and correspondent, with links to artist blogs and flickr photos.  Thought you knew your planet Earth?  Maybe it's time for a fresh perspective.

  1. That Urban Sketchers site is a cool find!

And I've been hearing "Albatross Pub" a lot lately. Seems like it's worth a try.

  4. No not really, but I went for it anyway, can't be that bad, c'mon...

I believe this is what they call in the business "peer pressure".
